’21 homers in best season, 450 in career’… SSG defeats NC 2-1

SSG pulled off a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against NC in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at SSG Landers Field in Incheon, South Korea, at 6:30 p.m. on September 9. With the win, SSG remained in second place with 53 wins, 1 draw and 40 losses on the season. NC, whose five-game winning streak came to an end, is now 49-1-44 on the season.

SSG starting pitcher left-hander Roenis Elias threw 100 pitches in six innings, allowing one run and two hits while walking four and striking out three to record his fifth win of the season. At the plate, designated hitter Kim Kang-min went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a walk.

NC starting left-hander Choi Sung-young took the loss, throwing 68 pitches in 4.2 innings, allowing two runs, five hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

NC was the first team to strike first. In the top of the first inning, leadoff hitter Son As-seob walked and the next batter, Park Min-woo, singled to left to put runners on first and second with no outs. Park Min-woo’s fly to center field put runners on second and third. Jason Martin then grounded out to first base, allowing the runners to cross home plate to give NC the lead.

SSG fought back. In the bottom of the third inning, Kim Kang-min led off with a single to left field. Kim Sung-hyun followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.

With the momentum going their way, SSG took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run from leadoff hitter Choi Jung. With this hit, Choi reached 450 career home runs. He became the second player in KBO history (Lee Seung-yeop) and the first right fielder and the youngest (36 years, 5 months, 12 days).

In the top of the sixth inning, NC put runners on first and second after a leadoff walk to Kim Joo-won and a single to right by Park Min-woo. 메이저사이트 Park Gun-woo singled to center to load the bases, but Martin and Kwon Hee-dong, the No. 4 hitters, were stranded with a standing strikeout and a fielder’s choice, respectively.

NC opened its offense in the top of the eighth when leadoff hitter Kim Ju-won drew a walk. The next batter, Son As-seob, hit a hard hit toward first base, but was caught by Kang Jin-sung at the plate. Furthermore, Kim Joo-won was thrown out trying to advance to third base. Eventually, Park Min-woo was retired on a grounder to first base, and NC blew a golden opportunity.

After surviving the crisis, SSG brought up Seo Jin-yong to close out the top of the ninth to preserve the one-run lead. Seo came up and shut down the NC bats. In the end, the game ended with a win for SSG.
